For many years investigators have failed to discover any land,
tax, court or church records lending support ot the old tradition that brothers
Benjamin, Joseph and Samuel Hawkins came to Gloucester Co., Virginia, in 1685,
and Samuel Hawkins came to Gloucester Co, Virginia, in 1685, and Samuel was the
father of Joseph and two other sons. An inscript nt he 1835 tombstone of one of
the gransons of this last-named Joseph in the Riverview Cemtery, Strasburg,
Shenandoah Co., Virginia, is evidence that the tradition recounted above is not
a new one: "In Memory of Colonel Samuel Hawkins, born 1776, died 1835, a Great
Grandson of Samuel Hawkins, who with two brothers came from England in
1685."
